She is a cum laude graduate of Harvard College, a graduate of Columbia Law School, where she was a member of the Law Review, and clerked for Judge Jack B. Weinstein, United States District Judge for the Eastern District of New York.

A native New Yorker,  Altman is the daughter of legendary entertainment lawyer Floria V. Lasky.

Emily Altman became President of The Frederick Loewe Foundation in November 2013 after a long career on Wall Street.  Until 2008, she was a Managing Director and Head of International Government Relations at JPMorgan Chase and, before that, Head of International Government Relations for Morgan Stanley for almost a decade. She has also been a Senior Policy Adviser at Fleishman Hillard, the global strategy firm. She began her career as a domestic and international banking and securities lawyer at Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York City.

In addition to being President of the Foundation, Altman maintains a practice as a financial and commercial mediator and arbitrator in New York City.  

She is a member of both the Theatre and Dance Advisory Boards of Hunter College. She also sits on the Boards of Directors of the American Friends of Hebrew University, New York Region, and Supporters of Civil Society in Russia which supports the work of the Moscow School for Civic Education.
